LAS VEGAS — Al Bernstein, a Hall of Fame boxing commentator, is speaking out about recent commentary in the sport. Bernstein has been a commentator for over 40 years, and he is widely considered to be one of the best in the business.
In an interview with Zenger News, Bernstein expressed his concerns about the direction of boxing commentary. He said that he believes that too much emphasis is being placed on opinion and analysis, and not enough on simply calling the fight.
“Boxing is one of those sports where you have to call the fight round by round,” Bernstein said. “You have to pay attention to everything that’s happening, and you have to be able to describe it in a way that’s informative and entertaining.”
Bernstein said that he believes that too many commentators are getting caught up in trying to be experts, and that they are losing sight of their primary responsibility, which is to call the fight.
“I’m not saying that analysts don’t have a place in boxing commentary,” Bernstein said. “But I think that the analysis should be secondary to the calling of the fight.”
Bernstein also spoke about the upcoming welterweight unification fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford. Bernstein said that he believes that the fight has the potential to be one of the best welterweight fights in history.
“I think this fight has the potential to be one of the best welterweight fights in history,” Bernstein said. “Both Spence and Crawford are elite fighters, and I think they’re going to bring their A-game on July 29th.”
Bernstein said that he is excited to call the fight, and he is confident that it will be a memorable one.
“I’m really looking forward to this fight,” Bernstein said. “I think it’s going to be a great night of boxing.”
