Donald Trump recently took to the Truth Social platform to slam Gen. Mark Milley, who served as his chairman of the Joint Chiefs during his presidency, and the embattled, former president’s rant attracted the attention of his niece Mary Trump.
What Happened: Milley, who is set to retire by Oct. 1, is a “Woke train” who gave China “a heads up” regarding “the thinking of the U.S. President,” said Donald Trump in the post on Friday. “This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH,” he said. A war between the U.S. and China could have resulted because of this treasonous act, he added.
Mary Trump said her uncle’s outburst may have to do with an Atlantic story, “The Patriot: How General Mark Milley protected the Constitution from Donald Trump,” which profiled Milley.
The Atlantic story includes negative assessments of Donald Trump from Milley and other military officers, all of which were bound to provoke the ex-president, Mary Trump said.
In the piece, Milley described Donald Trump’s behavior on Jan. 6 as “shameful” and “complicit.” The general also noted that he was deeply concerned that the ex-president’s “ ’Hitler-like’ embrace of the big lie about the election would prompt the president to seek out a ‘Reichstag moment,’ ” Mary Trump noted.
“It is the portrait of a vicious, ignorant, man-child who needed to be treated with kid gloves because of his lack of impulse control and supra-abundance of vindictiveness,” she said of the piece.
Misrepresenting Truth: Delving into what transpired between Milley and China, Mary Trump said that, in the lead-up to the 2020 election and in the wake of Donald Trump’s “erratic behavior and irresponsible threats” against China, the general spoke with his Chinese counterparts, who were reportedly “concerned” that the U.S. was going to launch an actual attack against them.
“Milley’s stated goal was to ‘deconflict military actions, manage crisis, and prevent war between great powers that are armed with the world’s most deadliest weapons,’” she said.
“Do we think his amped up followers … are going to read Donald’s post as mere historical commentary? No,” she added. “Neither does Donald. That’s why he posts such things. He knows what his followers will believe after reading, ‘in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH.’ They will believe that Gen. Milley betrayed Donald and therefore deserves to die.”
