Competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4, Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU) has launched the upgraded version of its Ernie bot with V4.0. Although, the model is not yet accessible to the public.
At the Baidu World 2023 conference in Beijing, CEO Robin Li showcased the capabilities of Ernie Bot 4 which included understanding complex questions, generating pictures, and handling basic arithmetic, according to CoinGape.
Baidu’s own large language model, trained on a massive dataset of text and code, supports Baidu’s Ernie Bot. It enables customers to receive human-like text responses for prompts and questions. Ernie Bot has a user base of 45 million and 54,000 developers, according to the South China Morning Post.

The company stated earlier that it has outperformed Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT)-backed ChatGPT in some Chinese-language tasks and has been integrating it into search, maps, file-sharing, work collaboration, and data analytics.

Baidu sees Ernie Bot to become one of its core businesses simultaneously with online marketing, which will assist the company in restoring users lost to all-purpose apps run by TikTok-owner ByteDance Ltd. and Tencent.
Baidu’s Other Developments
Among the other developments announced at the event, the company is also seeing the integration of generative AI across all its products, including Baidu Drive and Baidu Maps. Baidu Map now allows users to access functions with natural language queries powered by Ernie compared to earlier when users had to scan through numerous options.
Brokerage firm CLSA data indicated that with almost 130 large language models, China now accounts for 40% of the global total which is just behind the U.S. at 50%, Reuters reported.
