Despite having won four world titles in two separate weight classes, Natasha Jonas is as motivated as ever for her bout against Mikaela Mayer on Saturday, January 20 at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.
In Liverpool, a mural honoring the accomplishments of a world boxing champion, Natasha Jonas(14-2-1, 9 KOs) was recently revealed. The mural was made by the British street art team MurWalls and is located near Natasha Jonas’s Toxteth childhood home.
“It’s big. It’s special and I just want to do the people that have supported me and my family proud. And do myself proud more than anything. To be recognised and celebrated by the community that’s supported me all along my journey is something special. The streets of Toxteth made me. I’m proud to be from these streets. I’m proud to be from Liverpool. Growing up there were a lot of stereotypes about Toxteth and what you could be if you were from there. I’ve spent my whole life fighting those stereotypes,” said Jonas in media reports.
“I was just a little girl from these streets chasing my dreams. There’s been a lot of hard work and ups and downs along the way, but I’ve made those dreams come true. Without these streets and without the support of the community, I would never have grown into the person I am now,” she added.
“I hope this mural can help inspire more people like me and show that no matter where you’re from, what your circumstances are or what people say, you can achieve your dreams. Don’t let anyone tell you who you can become, that’s on you,” she explained.
At the London Olympic Games in 2012, Jonas, 39, became the first female boxer to represent Great Britain, and in 2022, she became the first woman to earn the coveted British Boxer of the Year title from the British Boxing Board of Control.
After previously unifying the world titles for the WBC, WBO, and IBF super welterweight divisions, Jonas defeated Kandi Wyatt in July to win the IBF welterweight championship, making history as a two-weight world champion.
Jonas obtained her manager’s license from the British Boxing Board of Control in October, making history as the first black woman to do so.
