— Moroccos’ 2026 FIFA World Cup bid remained on track Saturday night after the Atlas Lions defeated Canada 3-0 in Houston Stadium to reach the quarterfinals with a masterful midfield display, led by the ever-calm Azzedine Ounahi.

Morocco produced another disciplined and methodical display, a blend of defensive solidarity and astute attacking accuracy, in front of a vociferous crowd to end the most successful World Cup journey to date for their North American opponents.

Coming into the tie with momentum and expectation following a historic group-stage campaign, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch pushed his side forward in an attempt to match MoroccoÔÇÖs physicality and intensity with pressure high up the pitch. But, when called upon, Morocco showed incredible control and poise under pressure.

From the very outset, Ounahi played a central role in MoroccoÔÇÖs midfield. Maintaining the rhythm of the team with intelligent passing and keeping the ball moving to relieve Canadian pressure, Ounahi made it easy for Morocco to build and break through Canadian lines.

In essence, the game pitted the all-action style of Canada against the tactical control of Morocco. Canada pressed with speed and ferocity, determined to exploit any weaknesses in the Atlas Lions defense. Morocco held firm, organized and patient, picking their moments carefully to attack and break from well-rehearsed plays.

Whenever Canada pressed forward, Morocco had an answer, the backline shutting down space efficiently while swift counterattacks began to find space behind the Canadian defense. After scoring the opening goal, it became a matter of simply adjusting to Canada’s increasing urgency to break down the North Africans and then simply exploiting the space that became available, methodically.

As the goals multiplied, the outcome was all but sealed with another fine finish to add to MoroccoÔÇÖs first-half strike, while a third put the icing on the cake, testament to their efficiency and knockout-stage mentality. In the midst of the goal flurry and tactical maneuvering, Ounahi continued his role as the conductor.

Retaining possession, winning tackles, and ensuring the team remained compact regardless of the growing margin of victory, he was not flashy. Still, his importance in controlling the match and the pace of the game was undeniable.
