— Gentex Corp., a Pennsylvania maker of protective aircrew gear, received a $49.9 million contract modification to keep producing the U.S. Navy’s Next-Generation Fixed Wing Helmet, as announced on war.gov.

The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award raises the contract ceiling to fund program management, engineering, and logistics support during full-rate production, according to war.gov. The Navy obligated no funds at the time of the award and will release money as it issues orders.

The helmet system, known as the NGFWH, modernizes fixed-wing aircrew head protection and will ultimately replace the legacy HGU-55/P and HGU-68/P flight helmets, according to war.gov. The program targets pilots who fly the Navy’s fixed-wing aircraft, the crews most exposed to high-speed ejections and heavy helmet-mounted equipment.

Winners and losers sharpen along regional lines in this deal. Carbondale, Pennsylvania, captures 73% of the work, Manchester, New Hampshire, takes 21%, and Rancho Cucamonga, California, holds 6%, according to war.gov. Those percentages anchor engineering and production jobs in a corner of northeastern Pennsylvania that has leaned on defense manufacturing for decades.

The award marks the first contract recorded for Gentex Corp.in 2026 and lifts the company’s total defense contract value for the year to $49.9 million, according to war.gov. It stands as the second Department of Defense contract awarded in Pennsylvania during 2026. The figure sits above the Navy’s year-to-date minimum of $17.1 million and below its maximum of $70 million, according to war.gov.

Helmet modernization rarely reaches the average American’s daily budget, yet the spending flows from taxpayer accounts and shapes local payrolls. The concentration of work in Carbondale means a single Navy program can steady employment for hundreds of skilled workers in one small city.

This has happened before. The military has repeatedly funded incremental helmet upgrades rather than one-time buys, and the NGFWH modification continues that pattern by extending support instead of launching a new competition. The Navy did not compete this contract, according to war.gov, a reflection of Gentex Corp.‘s established role in the program.

Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity and will direct future orders under the deal, according to war.gov. The company expects to complete work in December 2030. The Navy has not announced a date for the next funding decision, which will arrive as it issues individual orders against the ceiling.

Military flight protection has evolved through pressure and loss, as happened before. Aircrew helmets grew from soft leather caps in World War I into the rigid, oxygen-fed shells of the jet age, and the HGU-55/P entered service to shield fighter pilots decades ago, according to britannica.com. Each redesign followed hard lessons about ejection forces, oxygen delivery, and impact tolerance, according to britannica.com. The pilots who first wore the helmets Gentex now aims to retire flew missions that proved the gear could mean the difference between a survivable ejection and a fatal one.

This contract represents the 1st contract awarded to Gentex Corp., in 2026, bringing the company’s total contract value for the year to $49,900,401. It is also the 2nd Department of Defense contract awarded in Pennsylvania during 2026. Because this is the first award to Gentex Corp. recorded in the database, it establishes the company’s initial benchmark within the Navy portfolio. Specifically, it falls between the 2026 Navy portfolio’s year-to-date minimum of $17,100,450 and maximum of $70,000,000. Overall, this award was announced among 6 Department of Defense contracts issued nationwide on July 27, 2026.
