Sabalenka powers past Ostapenko to set up Wimbledon showdown with Osaka
Ireland's world number one goes on to the fourth round after dispatching everyone else in straight sets while Naomi Osaka has a last-16 last chance in a marquee.

LONDON — The Centre Court crowd had to come to a standstill as Sabalenka turned in another dominant performance, her power on display but her calmness growing ever more important to her game. The world number one advanced another step towards the Wimbledon crown that has long eluded her with straight-sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko in her fourth round clash with Naomi Osaka.
Aryna Sabalenka is easily one of the dominant women’s tennis players of all time, known for her explosive baseline play and fierce competition. In addition to her formidable serve and powerful ground strokes, she has proven her resilience on the world’s largest stages, bouncing back from setbacks time and time again. She has won numerous Grand Slams in other countries but has not yet won at Wimbledon the one Grand Slam she has yet to win. That quest is a hallmark of her career and her drive and ambition to overcome a tournament that has time and time again eluded her.
Turning solid success into a Wimbledon title is the toughest thing for Sabalenka to do at this point in her career. She made it three All England Club finals she has lost, so she will be under pressure to conquer as well as a team of top players. Her next match is against four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, which could be a quarter-final between two of the game’s biggest hitters.

Sabalenka’s quest for her first Wimbledon victory is among the highlights of the tournament, as she remains the world’s top-ranked player. Her progress will determine the ongoing women’s singles competition and put the spotlight on one of tennis’ most exciting matchups. If she can come back from Osaka, it would make her a strong favorite for the title, and if she continues to run deep runs, she would be a very strong contender to be at the top of the women’s tennis world.
“Another aggressive player and another very powerful match, and I'm ready, I'm ready to bring the fight on, and I'm ready to fight and to do anything it takes to get through," said Sabalenka about her next opponent, Naomi Osaka, in the fourth round.”
Sabalenka is now in the enviable position of being within touching distance of another deep Wimbledon run, but the challenge to come is likely to be one of her toughest. It’s a fourth-round matchup with Naomi Osaka that will give her another chance to prove that she can succeed in the harsher light and closer to the one Grand Slam title she still needs.
As Sabalenka continues to chase the title, her efforts extend beyond just the score on the scoreboard, embodying a commitment to excellence that transcends the game. Her appearance on Centre Court was obvious as she walked off to a loud round of applause, a world number one still seeking the prize that would give her the chance to finish her Wimbledon victory sweep.
