Donald J. Trump declared the United States the “King of Oil,” claiming U.S. crude exports have surged to a historic high because of his energy policies.

The claim, posted on Trump’s truthsocial account, rested on a chart of weekly U.S. crude shipments attributed to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the Energy Department. The graphic showed exports near zero through the 1990s, climbing after 2015 and spiking to roughly 6,000 barrels a day at the far right of the timeline.

This is Trump’s 20th message released today. On average, Trump produces 18 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025.

The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 26 of his 461 posts over the last 30 days focused on the economy.

The timing of the export surge carries stakes for producers, refiners and consumers. Energy companies operating in the Permian Basin and along the Gulf Coast benefit from expanded export access and higher shipment volumes. Import-dependent nations and domestic buyers face a market in which U.S. barrels increasingly set the price, while environmental groups warn that record fossil-fuel output complicates emissions goals.

United States crude exports remained legally restricted for four decades. Congress lifted the 1975 ban on most crude oil exports in December 2015, and shipments climbed sharply afterward. The country became a net petroleum exporter in 2020 for the first time in records dating to 1949, a shift the shale boom made possible.

The magnitude places the United States alongside the largest exporters in the world. American crude shipments now rival flows from members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, a reversal from the era when the country depended on foreign oil for the bulk of its supply.

For the average U.S. reader, crude export levels feed into gasoline and diesel prices at the pump and into the trade balance. Higher exports can support domestic drilling jobs, though pump prices track global benchmarks rather than export totals alone.

This has happened before. Presidents across party lines have claimed credit for rising domestic energy output. Export records have been set repeatedly since the 2015 policy change, each time drawing political framing from the sitting administration.

The Energy Information Administration publishes updated weekly petroleum data on a recurring basis, and its next release will show whether the reported spike holds. A specific date for any policy decision tied to the claim has not been announced.

Presidents laying claim to the nation’s oil fortunes is not a first. President Jimmy Carter, facing the 1979 energy crisis, urged conservation and installed solar panels on the White House roof, according to millercenter.org. President Ronald Reagan removed those panels and deregulated oil prices in 1981, according to millercenter.org, and domestic production shifted through the following decade in ways that outlasted the men who promised to control it.
