Karolina Muchova staged a remarkable comeback against the odds to beat Coco Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(10) in the thrilling Wimbledon women’s singles semifinal in London on Thursday. The Czech 10th seed extended her Wimbledon run with a match-point win after an epic deciding-set tiebreak to qualify for her first Wimbledon final – and one win closer to a maiden Wimbledon championship – in the process.

The world’s top players come to London each year to compete in Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament, which is played on grass. Muchova, who has earned a reputation as one of the most creative shot makers on the tour, was among four women in the 2026 semifinals who were hoping to continue an impressive run through the draw to make a bid for Saturday’s final, while Gauff was looking to extend her Grand Slam final résumé.

The whole game was characterized by Muchova’s calmness. The Czech skillfully combined all three types of shots with a shot-and-run baseline attack, adapting to Gauff’s power and athleticism again and again. Even after giving up set 2, she was not going to surrender, remaining patient in the match until the final moments. In the final-set tiebreak clash against Muchova, she put her confidence in her intuition, held her nerve and finished with the biggest Wimbledon win of her career to make her debut in the Wimbledon final.

It quickly became more of a fight for endurance and courage. Gauff bounced back after losing the first set and looked set to make it to the final when she earned a match point in the tiebreak of the deciding set. Muchova, however, did not go down easily, she remained undaunted and steady in the face of pressure. But the momentum changed several times until the Czech got her shot home, and one of the most dramatic wins in the tournament’s history was complete.

Muchova is changing the course of the women’s draw by reaching the Wimbledon finals for the first time from the Czech Republic in 2026. Her win boosts Czech tennis on one of the sport’s biggest stages. The exciting semi-final was a terrific event for the fans, and now, for the organisers, broadcasters and sponsors, a thrilling clash of the top women’s players in the world is set for the finals.

“It sounds really nice to be in a final. Honestly, it was such a big fight. It was roller coaster," said Muchova.”

Muchova’s triumph was one of the most thrilling matches of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, highlighting her ability to come through when it mattered most and her resilient performance under pressure. Gauff won a match point with a triumph in the tie-break that decided the game and went on to make a breakthrough to the biggest match of her Wimbledon career, while she left London after another deep campaign that just fell short of the final.

In Saturday’s final, the Czech will square off against her compatriot Linda Noskova, coming into the tournament with a sense of momentum and confidence in her wherewithal to hold the winning edge all day long in her quest for her first Wimbledon title. In any case, her astounding Centre Court escape will undoubtedly resound in the hearts of all at the tournament as a sign of the determination it took to convert the slimmest of chances into the Grand Slam book.
