University of Alaska Fairbanks Wins $499 Million Army Nuclear-Detection Contract

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA — The University of Alaska Fairbanks, the state’s flagship research campus, won a $499 million Army contract to develop geophysical methods for detecting nuclear weapons proliferation, as announced on war.gov.

The cost-no-fee, cost-plus-fixed-fee, firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award covers essential scientific and engineering work under an approved University Affiliated Research Center, the Army said. One bid was solicited and one received. Work locations and funding will be set with each order, with an estimated completion date of Aug. 6, 2031.

Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, is the contracting activity under identifier W911NF-26-D-A013, according to war.gov. The University Affiliated Research Center model ties a school’s laboratories to a long-term Defense Department mission, giving the military access to academic expertise it cannot easily replicate in-house.

The award carries outsized weight for the campus. It is the largest contract ever awarded to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, surpassing a previous record of $46.7 million, according to war.gov. The deal represents the school’s first contract of 2026 and lifts its total federal contract value for the year to $499 million.

Nuclear-detection science stands to gain a stable, multiyear funding base, while rival research institutions competing for similar defense work lose ground to a single-source incumbent.
