Three Nordic Firms Awarded $9 Million Air Force Deal for Greenland Space Base
COWI Greenland, ISC Consulting Engineers and Ramboll Greenland secured a maximum $9 million contract for engineering services at Pituffik Space Base, with work running through August 2031.
Three Nordic engineering firms won a maximum $9 million Air Force contract to support real property at Pituffik Space Base, the U.S. military’s northernmost installation in Greenland.
COWI Greenland Aktieselskab,ISC Consulting Engineers Aktieselskab and Ramboll Greenland Aktieselskab took the firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award for architectural and engineering services, the Department of Defense said on August 7, 2026 at 5:00 PM ET as announced on war.gov. The deal covers Title I, Title II and other work, with completion expected by Aug. 9, 2031. The competitive acquisition drew five offers, according to war.gov.
“Vi arbejder allerede på en række vigtige projekter i Grønland inden for blandt andet forsvar, kritisk infrastruktur og udvinding af kritiske råstoffer,” Group Chief Executive Officer Jens Højgaard Christoffersen said in a statement, according to ritzau.dk. He said the need for major investment in defense, resilience and development in Greenland will only grow in coming years.
The award signals continued U.S. reliance on local Arctic contractors to maintain a base that anchors American missile-warning and space-surveillance operations far above the Arctic Circle.
The contract splits work across firms with deep regional roots. COWI has worked in Greenland for more than 60 years on defense and infrastructure projects, hospital construction and urban development, according to ritzau.dk. The firm opened an office in Nuuk on Oct. 1, 2025, and named Lasse B. Mousten as managing director for Greenland. Mousten has lived in the country for the past 18 years, the firm said.
The stakes reach beyond the three awardees. Local engineering firms and Greenlandic suppliers stand to benefit from sustained federal spending, while the U.S. secures maintenance capacity for a strategic outpost. The contract obligated $15,000 in fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance funds at the time of award, with the balance available across the five-year term.
Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, sits about 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle and supports missile warning, missile defense and space surveillance missions. Renamed in April 2023, it remains the Space Force’s only installation in the Arctic. The base drew renewed political attention as Washington weighed Greenland’s strategic value.
This award marks the first contract recorded for each of the three firms in 2026, establishing their initial benchmark within the Air Force portfolio. The $9 million ceiling falls between the branch’s year-to-date low of $17 and high of $5.6 billion. The deal was one of eight Defense Department contracts announced nationwide that day.
The engineering award ranks small against the Air Force’s largest 2026 deals, yet it carries outsized geographic weight given Greenland’s remote location and harsh climate.
For the average U.S. reader, the contract reflects how far federal defense dollars travel to keep a polar early-warning site operational and how foreign firms sustain American installations abroad.
Such arrangements have happened before. The Pentagon has long relied on Danish and Greenlandic contractors to build and maintain facilities at the base, where extreme conditions demand local expertise and logistics.
Contracting authority for the deal rests with Detachment 1, 21st Contracting Squadron in Copenhagen, which will oversee task orders through the completion date. A date for the next award decision has not been announced.
Greenland has drawn great-power attention for generations, and this deal isn’t the first time distant powers competed over the island. The United States offered to buy Greenland from Denmark for $100 million in gold in 1946, an approach Copenhagen rejected. American forces built the Thule base in the early 1950s under a 1951 defense agreement with Denmark, cementing a presence that endures under the renamed Pituffik Space Base today.
