(b. June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York) is the 47th and 45th president of the United States. Trump served his first term from January 20, 2017, to January 20, 2021, and began his second term on January 20, 2025. Before holding public office, Trump owned the Trump Organization, a conglomerate dealing in real estate and other industries, and hosted The Apprentice on NBC. Trump defeated Hillary Clinton (D) in the 2016 presidential election, and was then defeated by Joe Biden (D) in the 2020 presidential election. Trump won election to a second term in the 2024 presidential election, making him the second president in U.S. history to serve for non-consecutive terms. Trump became the Republican nominee after winning a majority of delegates at the Republican National Convention on July 15, 2024. Trump selected U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his vice presidential running mate on July 15, 2024. Key policy initiatives during Trump's first term included the United States withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and First Step Act in 2018, reducing the size of the ISIS caliphate, and establishing the Space Force as an independent military branch. Trump made 234 federal judicial appointments, including three U.S. Supreme Court justices. This was the highest number of appointments in a president's first term among U.S. presidents serving between 1981 and 2021. Trump issued ten vetoes during his first term in office, one of which was overridden by Congress. During the first year of Trump's second term, Trump signed a reconciliation bill titled One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law, which sought to address tax policy, border security and immigration, defense, energy production, the debt limit, and adjustments to SNAP and Medicaid. Additionally, Trump issued 225 executive orders, the highest first-year executive order total since Franklin Delano Roosevelt (D), who issued 568 executive orders in 1933. The largest topic category of Trump's orders was foreign policy at 60 orders, 35 of which pertained to tariffs. Trump has issued two vetoes during his second term in office. Trump is the first president to be indicted on and convicted of criminal charges after leaving office. In May 2024, a New York jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. There were two federal indictments issued against Trump in 2023, one related to the handling of classified documents and another related to interference in the certification of the 2020 presidential election. These cases were dismissed in November 2024. In August 2023, Trump was indicted by a Georgia grand jury on criminal charges related to interference in the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. The case was dismissed in December 2025. In June 2023, Trump responded to his indictments saying, "it is election interference at the highest level. There has never been anything like what has happened. I am an innocent man." On December 18, 2019, Trump became the third president in U.S. history to be impeached by the U.S. House. The U.S. Senate acquitted Trump on both charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress on February 5, 2020. Trump was impeached a second time on January 13, 2021, for incitement of insurrection following the January 6, 2021, breach of the United States Capitol. On January 12, 2021, Trump called the impeachment resolution the "continuation of the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics." The Senate acquitted Trump on February 13, 2021. Since 2017, Trump has been an active influencer in the Republican Party, issuing endorsements in elections across the country. During his first term, Ballotpedia identified 305 endorsements issued by Trump. Since the end of his first term, Trump has issued hundreds of additional endorsements. He issued the most during the 2024 election cycle. A Ballotpedia analysis found that in the general election, 89% of Trump-endorsed candidates won their elections.
