Why Cybersecurity Jobs Are Growing In The AI Era
Human expertise remains indispensable and of high value in cybersecurity, even when AI is automating repetitive tasks.

CALIFORNIA CITY, CALIFORNIA — Cybersecurity will remain AI-resistant; this is because there is still a great need for human-guided logic to fight machine-speed threats. It is a battlefield between cybercriminals and cybersecurity professionals, where cyberattacks require human expertise to analyze novel attacks, make strategic decisions, and improve defenses.
Cybersecurity professionals cannot therefore be fully put aside by automation. AI defense mainly depends on historic / familiar patterns; the algorithms can’t keep up with the creative launch of attacks that human attackers do.

Even though AI can flag alerts at lightning speed, this hasn’t stopped cybercriminals from studying every improvement in defensive AI and adapting. The solution to this could be investment in intelligent human opponents, which calls for a partnership in which AI handles the routine data crunching while humans handle critical decision-making.
In a post on LinkedIn, the chief security intelligence officer at Palo Alto Networks, Wendi Whitmore, said, “AI has fundamentally changed how quickly vulnerabilities are being discovered.”
In the U.S., 1.5 million people are employed in cybersecurity; this is according to a Tech Target report for 2025. These numbers are not enough to fulfill the need at hand, as 500,000 remain unfilled.
The same challenge of vacant positions is faced by the entire world too. This is a result of the demand that technology is bringing. Most companies are not looking for entry-level employees; most entry-level work is automated. As AI continues to evolve, so does the demand for high-level talent.
AI in cybersecurity only deals with problems already solved, previous attacks, known malware, existing vulnerabilities, and historic behavior. The adversarial nature is the main cause of the need: the continuous arms race. According to a recent ISC2 cybersecurity workflow study, the global shortfall of professionals is at approximately 4.8 million unfilled positions.
Additionally, 87% of organizations reported facing AI-tailored cyberattacks in the past year. This statistical evidence behind the cybersecurity skill gap shows that it is mainly because of a shortfall in capabilities to counter high-level AI-driven attacks.
AI is automating processes in cybersecurity; it is also increasing AI cyberattacks. This has increased demand for skilled professionals to validate AI-generated findings, strengthen security defenses, and continuously make strategic decisions. In times of global anxiety, when the talk is about AI taking jobs, human expertise in cybersecurity is experiencing a shift in the type of work handled daily.
Professionals no longer spend time reviewing endless logs manually; they think creatively, anticipate attacker behavior, adapt strategies, and make judgmental calls.
Human attackers can “compress time” using AI and automation from weeks taken to attack down to a few minutes. These are complex incidents that create demand for professionals who not only know cybersecurity but also incorporate AI in their proficiency.
Take an incident where attackers use AI to identify “zero-day” gaps that defenders of a system have not identified. While defending, AI will only defend based on its algorithm; humans must remain accountable. From cloning voices to deepfakes, phishing campaigns, mutation malware, and polymorphic attacks, offensive AI has managed to increase the speed of attacks, increase attack volume, lower the barrier for cybercriminals, and create new attack surfaces.
Organizations are in demand for professionals who recognize AI as another work tool and not a replacement tool. These are professionals who will configure AI systems and validate AI decisions (to eliminate hallucination possibilities), investigate AI alerts, respond to incidents, and develop security strategies. Can we conclude that cybercriminals benefit more from AI?

Many questions still linger concerning cybersecurity: who will save the cyber world? Can it be secure enough in time when everyone’s personal endeavors are attached to it? Why is security lagging at the expense of good conduct? The attackers must be benefiting.
