— Kylian Mbappé sealed France’s advance to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup with a tense Round of 16 win over Paraguay on Saturday in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, as he found the net with a hard-fought goal. The French forward’s steely finish was all that was needed to part two teams in front of a packed crowd as the Paraguayan defense had taken one of the favorites of the tournament by the horns with a restrained display.

The World Cup’s knockout phase, where every game is a win or go home, kicks off in the Round of 16. France came to Atlanta confident in their ability to take on the race for another world title, having breezed through the group stage, while Paraguay had done plenty to surprise everyone so far with an impressive group campaign that saw them taking down Germany. They were one of the surprise teams in the tournament, as they were hard to beat and tough to handle, making them an interesting opponent for Didier Deschamps’ veterans.

Mbappé was once again the focal point of France’s attack. The forward has been well-marked all match but stayed cool as Paraguay kept France at bay in search of a shot. His speed and poise constantly tested the defense of South America, until he found the opening that would put the game on ice. The objective was the main reason for France’s most reliable player, Mbappé, being the one to step up when they were in need, and that is exactly what he did.

Paraguay didn’t make it easy for the former world champions. As they were so compact in defense, France had to rely on their attacking play to break the deadlock and were in danger of going into extra time. Each French onslaught was repelled with firmness, and an increasing threat was created in the stadium as time passed. Mbappé’s knockout blow broke the resistance of Paraguay, who had played an exciting World Cup campaign.

The win helps France maintain their world-class status, and bring their hopes for another World Cup success to the fore. The progress also boosts the supporters’ and sponsors’ confidence and that of the French Football Federation as the decisive stage of the competition approaches. Paraguay’s tournament was a failure, but they have been improving their game against some of the world’s best and left with a newfound confidence despite the defeat.

Deschamps admitted that Paraguay’s disciplined defense had a negative impact on the French, as they did not have enough space to play and find their rhythm. While he noted that his side could have played the ball faster and more effectively, the coach was stressing that the emphasis in knockout football is to move forward, not play perfect football. He believes that winning a tricky test match would help his relatively green team as the match-ups get tougher, and France will take on the match with an attitude of having already overcome a difficult challenge and gained a little experience.
