Donald Trump amplified a North Carolina voter-fraud case, pointing to a Canadian national who pleaded guilty to falsely claiming U.S. citizenship on state voter registration applications.

The defendant, 70-year-old Denis Bouchard, admitted to falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen to vote in the 2022 and 2024 presidential elections, and he faces up to five years in prison at sentencing, by mentioning the source (see wbtv).

This is the first message released by Trump today. On average, Trump produces roughly 30 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025.

Bouchard has lived in the United States since the 1960s but never obtained U.S. citizenship, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said (see wbtv). Court documents formed the basis for the guilty plea entered on Monday in Charlotte. The FBI’s Charlotte Field Office said election security remains one of the agency’s top priorities, adding that Americans expect fair elections and that democracy depends on them (see wbtv).

The stakes reach beyond a single courtroom. Supporters of stricter voter-verification rules cite cases like this as evidence for tighter citizenship checks, while critics argue that individual prosecutions are rare and do not signal widespread fraud. Bouchard bears the immediate cost, facing prison time and the loss of his standing after decades in the country.

Noncitizen voting is already illegal in federal elections, and documented cases remain uncommon relative to the tens of millions of ballots cast nationwide. North Carolina, a battleground state, drew intense scrutiny during the 2024 cycle, when its 16 electoral votes made it one of the most contested states in the country.

For the average U.S. reader, the case touches the mechanics of registration and the standards states apply when confirming eligibility. Any tightening of citizenship verification could add steps for lawful voters, from producing documents to confirming status before casting a ballot.

Has this happened before? Yes, individual prosecutions for noncitizen voting have surfaced in several states, with defendants pleading guilty to false citizenship claims on registration forms (see cbsnews.com). Such cases typically involve one person and result in fines, probation, or short prison terms rather than sweeping findings of coordinated fraud.

The next decision rests with a federal judge, who will determine Bouchard’s sentence. A date for the sentencing hearing has not been announced.

Election-integrity fights in North Carolina are not new, as happened before. In 2018, the state’s Ninth Congressional District race collapsed into turmoil after allegations of absentee-ballot tampering surfaced, prompting the North Carolina State Board of Elections to refuse to certify the result and order a new election. A political operative was later indicted, and Republican Mark Harris, who had led by 905 votes, did not run in the 2019 redo, which Republican Dan Bishop won. The episode showed how a single contested outcome can reshape a race and force officials to start over.

The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 108 of his 538 posts over the last 30 days focused on the topic “Elections”.
