WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump backed renaming New Mexico to “New America” in a Truth Social post, repeating his disputed claim that the state is one of the great vote-cheating states of all time.

Trump wrote that the change would be more prestigious for residents of the southwestern state. He offered no plan, sponsor, or timeline for a renaming.New Mexico entered the union as the 47th state in 1912, and took its name when Spanish explorers dubbed the area Nueva Mexico according to kids.nationalgeographic. Nueva means “new” in Spanish, and some experts trace the word Mexico to a name the Aztecs used for one of their gods according to kids.nationalgeographic.
