WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump warned that Republicans face permanent electoral defeat unless the Senate scraps the filibuster, the procedural rule requiring 60 votes to advance most legislation.
Trump claimed Democrats would seize the majority, grant statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., and add four Senators and eight House members. He said that outcome would give Democrats lasting control of federal elections and framed the stakes in existential terms for his party.

Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate majority, meaning seven Democrats must join to move any bill past the filibuster, according to newsweek. Trump earlier urged the Senate to eliminate the rule so Republicans could “quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of,” including the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, and predicted the party that ends the filibuster first will “survive and thrive,” according to newsweek.
Both conservative Republicans and progressive Democrats have pushed to eliminate the filibuster, according to newsweek. Critics say it enables minority rule and gridlock, while proponents say it encourages consensus and protects a party once locked out of power. A total of 35 House Democrats signed a resolution calling for the end of the rule, according to newsweek.
