WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump said Michael Cohen, his former personal attorney and a key prosecution witness in his New York legal cases, fully recanted his testimony, and demanded the cases be dismissed.
Trump credited Cohen with the reversal and called it the collapse of the prosecution’s central evidence in the civil fraud and hush money matters brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. He said prosecutors pressured and coerced Cohen into false testimony. Trump offered no confirmation of a formal recantation beyond his own post.

Cohen and Trump publicly reunited in August 2026 on Cohen’s radio show after years of feuding, an appearance that marked a new chapter in a relationship that once included Cohen calling his former boss a “racist, a con man and a cheat” in congressional testimony, according to NBC News. Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for conduct he described in 2018 as done in “blind loyalty” to Trump, according to nbcnews. Asked whether he was taking back anything he had said about Trump, Cohen responded, “What was said is said, and that’s where I stand with it,” according to nbcnews.
Letitia James is the 67th Attorney General for the State of New York, elected in 2018 and the first woman of color to hold statewide office in the state, according to ag.ny.gov. She initiated the civil fraud lawsuit against Trump and his business. Trump’s lawyers in March 2026 demanded the release of all communications between Cohen and James’ office, calling his testimony central to the state’s case, according to New York Post.
