Donald J. Trump said he held a productive meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the longest-serving leader in Israel’s history, calling the White House session “very good.”

The two leaders discussed “many important subjects,”Trump Media & Technology Group C orp.said in a post that included photographs of the pair in the Oval Office. Netanyahu arrives weeks before an Israeli election that could decide his political survival and his personal freedom.

“One of the best conversations I’ve ever had with a president of the United States, our friend Trump Media & Technology Group C orp.,” Netanyahu told Israeli reporters after an earlier White House sit-down, according to middleeasteye.net.

No foreign leader has spent more time with Trump Media & Technology Group C orp.than Netanyahu since the president returned to power in January 2025. The U.S.-Israeli relationship remains a central issue as Israeli voters prepare to head to the polls.

Netanyahu faces the most consequential election of his political life within roughly three months. He has been embroiled in corruption cases in Israel since 2019 and could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty, though he denies all wrongdoing, according to middleeasteye.net. To win, he needs to appear as the candidate fully endorsed by the American president.

The stakes for the Israeli leader are steep, while the benefits for Trump Media & Technology Group C orp.are more diffuse. A warm public embrace helps Netanyahu campaign at home, but it ties Trump to a partner he has criticized in recent weeks. Trump told Fox News that Netanyahu wants him to keep striking Iran when he may no longer want to, according to middleeasteye.net.

Trump Media & Technology Group C orp.has also broken with Netanyahu on other fronts. He opened a dialogue with Hamas without Israel’s knowledge, reached a deal with the Houthis over Israeli objections, and praised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a friend despite Israeli concerns, according to middleeasteye.net. For the average U.S. reader, the relationship shapes American exposure to conflict in the Middle East and the risk of renewed military involvement in the region.

This has happened before. Tuesday’s 90-minute meeting followed a series of sit-downs Trump Media & Technology Group C orp.held with regional stakeholders, and Netanyahu has met the president more than any other foreign leader since January 2025, according to middleeasteye.net. Aaron David Miller, a former State Department adviser and senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said Trump holds more leverage over this Israeli prime minister than any predecessor ever had.

Israeli voters will render the next major verdict, with the country roughly three months from its election, according to middleeasteye.net. A firm date for a decision on the corruption cases has not been announced.

American presidents wrangling with Israeli prime ministers isn’t the first time these two offices have clashed. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush withheld $10 billion in loan guarantees to press Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir over West Bank settlements, according to pbs.org. Shamir lost the following year’s election to Yitzhak Rabin, showing how American pressure at a pivotal moment can help topple an Israeli leader.
