— Argentina faced a huge challenge to keep their title defense alive in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup against Cape Verde. The defending champions fought back to ease the pressure from Cape Verde at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, securing a 3-2 victory.

The final round in the expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup is the Round of 32, where a single loss dooms a country’s fate in the tournament. Argentina came into the match as one of the favorites after surviving the group stage, and Cape Verde were among the shock teams to make it to the knockout stage with a memorable performance.

It was a matchup expected to be a walk for Argentina, but thanks to the disciplined defending and fearless attacking Cape Verde showed, it was one of the most dramatic meetings in the tournament.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni had to deal with all the turns and turns from the sidelines as Cape Verde kept coming up with one of the biggest World Cup upsets imaginable. Scaloni changed his strategy under pressure and told his team to stay calm as the pressure mounted in the stadium. He looked a little relieved when Argentina finally found the winning goal and played it through the final moments to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

The World Cup’s most popular side took on a spirited Cape Verde outfit that was not about to go away, and Argentina had to fight hard to avoid a stunning World Cup exit, ultimately winning 3-2. Cape Verde responded in kind, playing as ferociously as Argentina in their attack and, on the counterattack, finding gaps in the defending champions’ defense.

With the clock ticking, each challenge, clearance, and opportunity meant so much that Argentina pushed hard to maintain their title contention. At the same time, Cape Verde sought to make a historic mark in the tournament that would have forever changed it.

It is a triumph that will propel Argentina and its ambitions to defend its title into the next round, while extending the commercial popularity of one of the world’s most iconic football brands. Although the team was defeated, the performance has boosted Cape Verde’s international football image and encouraged the nation’s fans and those across Africa.

The memorable game also helped fans in Atlanta witness the excitement and glamour created by the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Cape Verde head coach Bubista believes that the show proved the identity that they had created during the tournament. He said he didn’t opt for negative strategies against Argentina, rather, he was asking his players to play on equal footing with inexperienced players at the World Cup. Disappointed with the extra-time defeat, Bubista said that taking the defending champions to the brink and representing Cape Verde with pride went beyond the scoreboard.
