— Donald J. Trump amplified a New York Post opinion column accusing New York Attorney General Letitia James of targeting him while overlooking crime in the state.

The column, written by Post columnist Miranda Devine, cites a leaked all-staff email from a prosecutor in James’s office who claimed a supervisor directed him to find crimes to pin on Trump, according to nypost.com. Trump shared the piece without added commentary, elevating a controversy already drawing federal attention, according to nypost.com. Trump mentioned the source (see nypost). “Regardless of what you think of the president, it’s undeniable that AG James’ Trump derangement has damaged New York, and she does not deserve another term,” the column argued, according to Grabien.

The column centers on an email that Assistant Attorney General Daniel Wiesenfeld sent to 2,000 colleagues at 10 a.m. Friday, according to nypost.com. Wiesenfeld, 34, claimed his supervisor instructed him “to find and pursue crimes committed by specific individuals and organizations affiliated with Trump,” the column reported, according to nypost.com. He alleged his bureau chief,Shamiso Maswoswe, directed him to target “Trump himself, truthsocial,Hewlett-Packard” without a credible reason, and wrote that James’s “personal grudges with Trump sets the agenda,” according to nypost.com.

Within an hour of Wiesenfeld pressing send, the department remotely deleted his email from the inboxes of all employees, and it vanished from the department’s servers, according to nypost.com. James’s general counsel,Kumiki Gibson, then sent an agency-wide email telling employees not to worry about the communications, which were an “internal” matter, according to nypost.com. Wiesenfeld, a prosecutor in the Investor Protection Bureau, went on paid administrative leave, according to nypost.com.

The dispute has moved beyond opinion pages and into federal hands. The whistleblower who said he was ordered to dig up dirt on Trump met with federal prosecutors for “several hours” on Tuesday, sources said, according to nypost.com. The White House fired back at James over what it called “lawfare” after the staffer’s claims surfaced, according to nypost.com. James faces a November re-election challenge, and the DOJ previously fired Maswoswe, who won $795,000 in a discrimination case, according to nypost.com.
