Trump said Baumgartner “helped pass the Laken Riley Act” and fought for U.S. border security. He described Baumgartner’s opponent, Carmela Conroy, as “a far left Democrat” and claimed she would deliver “the largest tax hike in history.”

Michael Baumgartner currently holds the office of U.S. Representative for Washington’s 5th Congressional District, a term running until January 3, 2027, according to ballotready. His professional record includes service as a Washington state senator from 2011 to 2019 and as the Spokane County treasurer, according to ballotready. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington State University and a master’s in international development from Harvard University, according to ballotready. Baumgartner is a candidate for the seat in the 2026 Washington General Election, according to ballotready.

Baumgartner has tied his first term to a tax package he calls the Working Families Tax Cuts. Congressman Michael Baumgartner commemorated the one-year anniversary of that law and said it “delivered historic tax relief for working families, seniors, and small businesses,” according to baumgartner.house.gov. The measure eliminated federal income tax on overtime pay for hourly wage earners and made gratuities tax-free for service workers, according to baumgartner.house.gov. It also established a $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program and boosted the fully refundable child tax credit to up to $2,500 per child, according to baumgartner.house.gov.

The general election for the seat is scheduled for November 3, 2026, according to ballotready. Voters in Washington’s 5th Congressional District will decide the contest between Baumgartner and Conroy on that date.
