WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump endorsed James Uthmeier, the attorney general of Florida, in a Truth Social post calling him one of the country’s best in that role. Trump tied the endorsement to a slate of conservative policy positions he attributed to Uthmeier. He said the Florida official carries his full backing.

Uthmeier’s earlier career included work at the federal level and in private practice. He served as a senior advisor and counsel to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, according to connect.ufalumni.ufl.edu. Uthmeier faces political pressure at home over the Hope Florida matter. House Democrats have called for a special session to consider his impeachment for his role in the diversion of $10 million in a Medicaid overpayment settlement that was routed into political committees he controlled, according to CBS News. The report centered on a $67 million settlement between the state and Centene Corporation, a Medicaid vendor, and House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell of Tampa asked for the session, according to cbsnews. A leaked grand jury report found the money was “misappropriated” but did not find enough evidence to charge anyone with a crime, according to cbsnews. Uthmeier and DeSantis have defended their actions, noting the grand jury brought no charges and asserting the settlement was legally sound, according to cbsnews. Uthmeier previously told Fox News the leak of the report was “another politicized, weaponized attack,” according to cbsnews.
