— Donald J. Trump said the United States is working on a large deal to buy potash from Belarus at a price well below what buyers currently pay Canada, framing the move as relief for American farmers and ranchers.

Trump said the pricing would be substantially less than the U.S. currently pays Canada, calling it very good news for agriculture. He named no buyer, seller, or closing date, and the post carried no supporting figures beyond the pricing comparison.

Here is the full post on truthsocial: “The United States is working on a massive Deal with respect to the purchase of Potash from Belarus. The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers. Thank you for your attention to this matter! Trump” on September 21, 2026 at 10:47 AM ET.

This is Trump’s 6th message released today, and the last post was 2 hours ago, and it is not part of a thread. On average, Trump produces 18 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025. The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 45 of his 549 posts over the last 30 days classified as Economy posts.

Belarus, a nation of 9.5 million governed by President Alexander Lukashenko for more than three decades, is one of the world’s largest potash exporters, and Washington has recently loosened restrictions on that trade. Under a deal in March that Washington helped broker, Lukashenko ordered the release of 250 political prisoners. The U.S. agreed to lift sanctions on two Belarusian state banks and the country’s Finance Ministry and to remove the top Belarusian potash producers from a sanctions list, according to pbs.

John Coale, Trump’s special envoy for Belarus, met Lukashenko in Minsk on September 15 and announced a further release of 25 prisoners in exchange for lifting sanctions on two Belarusian companies, Lakokraska and Bellesbumprom, according to houstonchronicle. Coale described the agreement as an interim deal and said he expects to return to Minsk in about a month, according to ips-journal.eu.

Lukashenko had pushed for the remaining U.S. sanctions to be lifted and raised potash supplies during the talks, according to pbs. He spoke of his readiness for both a major and a minor deal with Washington and cited potash supplies among the issues on the table, according to ips-journal.eu.

A central obstacle to expanded Belarusian potash exports lies with Europe rather than Washington. The lifting of U.S. sanctions does not restore the short, cheap export route via the Baltic ports, which requires decisions by the European Union and Belarus’ neighbors, according to ips-journal.eu. The State Department earlier asked Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania to allow Belarusian potash to pass through their territories, and both the EU and Belarus’ neighbors have held a hard line, according to ips-journal.eu.

Belarus still holds 912 political prisoners, including 20 journalists, according to pbs. Belarusian opposition leader-in-exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said she was grateful to Trump, Coale and the U.S. administration for making political prisoners a priority, while adding that repression continues, according to pbs.
