General Dynamics Awarded $400.4 Million Space Force Ground Contract

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA — General Dynamics Mission Systems Inc., the Scottsdale, Arizona, defense-electronics unit of General Dynamics Corp., received a Pentagon contract worth as much as $400.4 million to build the ground system for the military’s newest missile-tracking satellite layer.

The Space Development Agency awarded the sole-source letter contract for the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture Tranche Three ground segment, according to war.gov. The deal covers software development, test and integration, and operations and maintenance of the mission and service applications that will run the constellation. The award carries a not-to-exceed value of $400.4 million, and the agency obligated $60.7 million in fiscal 2026 research, development, test and evaluation funds at award, according to war.gov. The Space Development Agency, based in Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity under identifier FA2401-26-C-0003.

The stakes reach beyond one company. The ground segment is the nerve center that turns raw satellite signals into targeting and warning data, so control of that software gives General Dynamics a durable role across the constellation’s life. Rival integrators lose an opening for recurring operations-and-maintenance revenue, since the agency did not compete the acquisition. The Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture is the agency’s plan for a mesh of low-earth-orbit satellites that track missiles and relay data to forces on the ground.

Government contracting in orbit has reshaped fortunes before, as happened in the space race.
