WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump promoted a new government website that steers parents toward tax-advantaged investment accounts seeded with a $1,000 federal contribution for their children.
The Trump Accounts program offers accounts for U.S. citizens under age 18, and parents enroll a child by making an election when they file their taxes, according to youth.gov. Contributions can reach $5,000 per year. At age 18, the young person can withdraw the funds for education or a home with the tax advantages of a traditional IRA, according to youth.gov.

This is the first message released by Trump today. On average, Trump produces about 10 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025.
The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 56 of his 461 posts over the last 30 days focused on domestic policy.
The post shared a link to the official program site and directed families to claim an account, by mentioning the source (see trumpaccounts.gov). The attached image displayed a certificate-style graphic reading “$1,000” alongside the words “The contribution from the U.S. Treasury is here!” The graphic quoted investor Brad Gerstner and an account tied to the Invest America initiative marking the program’s launch.

A pilot program provides $1,000 into a Trump Account for every American child born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, according to youth.gov. Parents and children who track the account can gain real-world investing experience. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said every American child can have a stake in the world’s largest economy, according to youth.gov. Families with newborns in the eligibility window stand to benefit most, while the Treasury bears the cost of each seed deposit.
For the average U.S. reader, the program means a newborn child could start life with a federally funded investment account, provided a parent completes the tax election. The accounts grow through market exposure, which introduces both potential gains and market risk over the years before a child turns 18.
This has happened before in different forms. Federal savings vehicles such as the 529 education plan and the myRA retirement account have offered tax-advantaged growth to specific groups, though a direct Treasury deposit for children marks a new approach.
The Financial Literacy and Education Commission is updating the U.S. National Strategy for Financial Literacy this year, and the Treasury Department published a request for information to inform the effort, according to youth.gov. A date for the revised strategy’s completion has not been announced.
Tax-advantaged government accounts have shaped American saving before, as happened with the individual retirement account. Congress created the IRA in 1974, and the Roth IRA followed in 1997, expanding tax-free growth to millions of savers. Those measures reshaped how households prepared for retirement, giving lawmakers who backed them a lasting fiscal legacy.
